Diode Laser Settings

Note: Marking copper can be challenging, and the results are highly dependent on laser power due to the metal's natural properties.

Disclaimer: The above is general starting guidelines, settings may vary for different lasers and or grades of substrate.

See below some short videos using a Diode Laser.

What is the required laser temperature?

As an electro-magnetic 'light wave' with a wavelength of 10,600 nm, a laser beam includes energy that is (partially) absorbed by the substance. The photons, or 'light particles,' transmit their energy to the atomic or molecular structure of the substance, causing it to heat up. If the laser's energy is high enough and the laser is allowed to function for a long enough period of time, the temperature necessary to vaporize the substance develops on the material.

As an example:

Material 1 melts at around 140°C, whereas material 2 melts at 230°C — with 200 W laser power, one may thus cut material 1 faster than material 2, because the energy does not have to be applied for as long to material 1 as it does to material

What to do for Aluminum, Brass, Copper metals?

Generally you need to max out your power and slow down your speeds in order to attain high peak temperature levels for bonding on these high heat conductive metals. Slowing down your speed will also depend on how thick the metal is so you don’t warp it.

About our products

Does etching leave a permanent mark on metals?

Indeed, the mark is long-lasting and not readily erasable. The sole method to eliminate it is by machining the surface with fine sandpaper or a block. Prior to proceeding with a production run, it is crucial to test the mark's settings, permanence, and contrast on scrap metal to ensure its durability. Typically, removing the mark without impacting the substrate's finish proves to be unfeasible in most instances

How Plastics Laser Inks Work?

Plastic Laser Marking additives Must involve Injection molding or extrusion process and can work only with Fiber and Yag lasers.

It is NOT something you can apply on pre-existing plastic parts and mark with laser. It has to be processed with molding. Lazact Black or Lazact white is available in master batch form (small plastic granules) which can be mixed with your resin at 2-5% LDR by weight of the molding shot. The molding machine screw then mixes it with your resin in the barrel at 200 to 400 F and is then injected in your steel mold at a high pressure.

Can I reuse the already mixed powder later or does it expire?

Any of our BLI101... powder products are reusable after you mix it with Alcohol, the only condition is that it's kept with the lid closed tightly and the powder product is fully submerged in the solvent. Just stir it again and use it in the future. You can always add a few more drops of alcohol to compensate for minor evaporation so you get consistent application.

Are your products food safe?

We have a few customers who are using our products to engrave on kitchen knives and utensils as well as barbecue instruments. While laser marking technologies require additives and ink coatings from BLI, they are primarily determined by the end-user and their usage. Depending on their correct application and procedure, the final user must acquire FDA approval. Settings can vary depending on the substrate grade and the laser machine specs. Our suggestions are just a starting guideline.

We test our final results/applications after marking on metals especially when there is a food contact requirement and make sure that its not coming off or getting faded in alcohol, dishwasher and other tape tests and even scotch-brite pad. We would clean it thoroughly with water and soap or dishwasher them and clean them with alcohol before using it for food application. If you see the marking is coming off then its merely a speed and power setting issue that can be easily fixed. Finally, as you see above, food safety is also determined by the mark's performance, which is influenced by your process, settings, and testing to ensure that the final finished product meets legal guidelines.

We're always here for you. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions regarding how to use our solution for your needs.

Product safety

Brilliance Laser Inks provides high quality laser marking inks.  FDA approval must be obtained by each manufacturer where the process of marking would be considered part of the items manufacturing process. Laser marking process is not something the FDA can approve by itself.  It would really depend on the application process if it's followed correctly. You may also refer to our customer's testimonies or feedback that used our product.

How do I remove the marking?

A permanent mark is almost impossible to remove unless machined. The simplest way to machine would be using a fine sand paper or block in the same direction of the substrate grains this way the surface finish does not get distorted or look scratchy.

Beware : Always try and test the a scrap metal to check the settings, permanency and contrast prior to do a production run. In some cases it's not possible to remove the marking.

Can I engrave on coated/anodized metals using Black Metal Laser Marking Inks?

We only recommend engraving on bare metals when using the Black Metal Laser Marking Inks. Engraving on coated metals can lead to the coating being compromised or damaged, resulting in an uneven or imperfect engraving.

Aerosols

Should I open the air assist on my laser?

  • No, we don't recommend it – 🚫 it's best to minimize or turn off the airflow/air assist because our product can be removed from the surface with strong airflow before lasering.

  • Please do not confuse airflow with exhaust as you would need the exhaust while laser marking is in action to remove the unwanted fumes and debri from contaminating your optics.

Will Black metal marking spray work on aluminum?

  • Our black metal marking spray is a universal metal marking product and will also work on aluminum. But everything else on a product may have some limitations as there are several grades of metals for aluminum available in the market so it’s best to test it in your situation on your laser before you proceed to a volume purchase. For this very reason, and on-demand of our aluminum lovers we have already created marking specifically for aluminum, this is to expand our range of different aluminum grades and a variety of different lasers that can give higher permanency in those situations.

  • For aluminum surfaces, consider experimenting with our latest product, the Black Aluminum Metal Marking Inks. This specialized ink is formulated for use on aluminum metals, including anodized surfaces.
